FAQ’s

The Test

Q. What do I need to bring with me for my Test?

You MUST bring your actual photo card driving licence with you (a photo or copy of your licence will not be accepted).

If you have an older style paper licence then you MUST also bring an official form of photo ID, such as a passport.

Glasses or contact lenses should be worn if necessary.

Sensible footwear

You must supply a roadworthy vehicle.

Q. What vehicle can I take my test in?

Your vehicle must be:

  • right-hand drive
  • have less than 8 passenger seats
  • weigh no more than 3.5t
  • have 4 wheels
  • fitted with head restraints in all seats

The vehicle must have an unobstructed view out of the rear window which means that unfortunately you cannot use a van or convertible.

Your vehicle must also comply with road traffic law;

  • Be fully insured
  • Be taxed
  • Have a valid MOT (if required)

Q. Can I take my test in a vehicle with an automatic gearbox?

Yes you can take the test in either a manual or automatic and this will be recorded on the marking sheet.

Q. Can I record the test?

No… we do not allow recording of tests. If your vehicle has cameras fitted for insurance purposes then these are acceptable as long as the audio is disabled and the cameras are outward facing.

Q. Can I use my Private Hire or Hackney plated vehicle for the assessment?

A Private Hire or Hackney plated vehicle can ONLY be used if the vehicle is registered/plated to you and you want to change to another Authority, or your current Authority has asked you to take the test.

You will be required to show the examiner your driving licence and PH or HC badge to confirm your identity.

Q. Can I use a hire vehicle for the test?
When hiring a vehicle for use on test then you will need to declare to the hire company your intended use. Some hire companies restrict the vehicle use and may not be insured and the test may not go ahead and your fee will be lost.

Q. Do I have to bring any documentation?

There is no need to bring any vehicle documentation with you as the examiner will check the tax and MOT status of your vehicle online. You will be asked to sign a declaration on the marking sheet to confirm that the vehicle is insured. If you are unsure about your insurance cover we recommend that you check with your provider.

Q. Can I have an interpreter with me for the Assessment?

The assessment can only be conducted in the English language so candidates are not allowed to use interpreters on their assessment.

An interpreter may accompany deaf and / or deaf without speech candidates but the interpreter must be at least 16 years of age and communicate in English.
